Before we get in to Andrea & Peter’s wedding story, I have to show you this youtube clip!! Peter proposed to Andrea in front of a very large crowd and of course, she said yes. Take a look…
How did you and Peter meet each other?
Peter and I were married on September 27, 2014 after meeting on Eligiblegreeks.com and dating for 2 years.
It’s a pretty funny story how my eligiblegreeks.com profile was started. My Greek mother started my profile without my knowledge and once I found out I quickly hid my profile. After a few years of getting on and off the site and having no success I hid my profile and went on my way. About a year later I was chatting with some of the younger ladies at church about dating and enjoying their twenties and they encouraged me to get back on the website. I also had encouragement from my mom and other close friends. I reactivated my profile, changed my picture, and the rest is history.
Peter’s sister started a profile for him. That same night, he saw my recently updated profile picture.
Wow, so you met the man of your dreams via online dating. That’s a modern day love story. I love your proposal video. Can you tell me more about how Peter proposed to you?
After a year of dating and traveling back and forth from New Mexico to Iowa Peter and his sister and her family traveled to Albuquerque for our annual Greek Festival and to meet my family. Peter has another sister who lives in Toronto with her family and both his parents live in Nafpaktos, Greece so his sister meeting my family was very important. I knew that Peter and I were planning on spending our lives together and that this would be my last year performing with my beloved dance group at Greek Fest. However, I was completely blown away when Peter walked out on the stage at the end of our performance and got on one knee. I was so shocked I thought “we’re not done performing” and then realized quickly this was Peter making one more of my dreams come true.
He proposed to you in front of everybody! That is so sweet. And now you have it documents on video. Totally awesome.
Did you get straight in to wedding planning after that?
Yes. My mom was right there the whole time and Peter and I would schedule meetings around when he would be in town to visit me. We quickly decided on the Albuquerque Marriott Hotel for our reception and my church St. George was a given.
Following these decisions we were quick to book our other vendors before our date was taken. We could not have been happier with the vendors. They were’t just vendors to us but were and have become people we hold dear to us. Besides the basic wedding decisions that had to be made there were also some very important decisions we made based on our ideas.
The colors for our wedding reflected not only Peter’s favorite color (blue) but my very loud personality. I wanted vibrant colors and didn’t want to play it safe with that or the flowers. The cake was also something that was very important to us as well as the menu for dinner. Another hugely important decision was our wedding favors. Peter and I had our hearts set on miniature Ouzo bottles and fate stepped in when a friend of Peter’s was able to get them for us and ship them to New Mexico. What was most amazing was that the bottles were “Ouzo 7”, seven is my favorite number and the Ouzo is from Thrace which is where my Yiayia comes from.
Did you follow any Greek traditions on your wedding day?
We paid special attention to our crowns. We wanted them to be Greek Key as well as the tray for the crowns and our koumbaro made that possible.
Some other fun traditions that we included was Peter actually bought my shoes for me, before we were engaged, and the tray that held my shoes that day was one of my Yiayia’s trays. Peter’s brother in law brought the shoes to the room where I got ready and he stuffed the shoe with money.
My ‘something old’ was my Yiayia’s thimble which she always used. My ‘something borrowed’ were sapphire cufflinks that belonged to a cherished friend who passed away. We also pinned my Yiayia’s mati in my dress.
Our day was magical and one we will always love reliving.
So what’s next for the two of you?
We are expecting our first baby in 5 weeks and could not be more thankful for the incredible circumstances that brought us together as well as everyone that made our wedding day so special.
Congratulations!! That is very exciting news. We might have to do a follow up interview once you have the baby’s christening.
